Rick Hutcheson for Palm Springs City Council

More Goals » California Green Building

Palm Springs has not been a leader on environmental issues. Palm Desert adopted aggressive conservation goals. We weren’t first, we were third to adopt California Green Building. This must change.

  • Start with the quickest, biggest, easiest payback -- conservation. There are rebates our citizens aren’t pocketing, because we haven’t asked. City Hall must become the energy efficiency leader.
  • Palm Springs should set an example with the buildings and land we control. There should be desert landscaping on Tahquitz, instead of water spraying the street.
  • Our planning practices should provide incentives, and fast-track green development.
  • With our sunshine and wind, we should diversify our economy by seeking new businesses connected with conservation, solar and renewable energy.
  • Recent tourism research discovered that potential visitors think we’re not environmentally friendly. This must change. Eco-tourism is good for business.

As a Planning Commissioner, I’ve done more than talk. My colleagues voted unanimously to support my proposals recommending these things. But the buck stops with City Council.

That’s why I’m running.
